Collaborating at the forefront of quantum mechanics, they aim in shaping ultra-secure military communications and revolutionary computing networks.

The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) leads the way in advancing quantum computing and networking alongside industry and academic collaborators. Supported by Congress and funding, AFRL partners with companies like IonQ, Rigetti, IBM, and PsiQuantum to utilise their quantum technologies, harnessing the principles of quantum mechanics for data processing. AFRL researchers, based at the AFRL Extreme Computing facility and the Innovare Advancement Center, expedite progress by integrating commercial resources into ongoing research.

Dr Kathy-Anne Soderberg, AFRL’s senior scientist for quantum science and technology, stresses the importance of hands-on access to commercial tech for driving quantum advancements. Their focus spans from individual quantum bits (qubits) to system-level development, aiming for highly secure quantum communications in military contexts. Collaboration between AFRL and the commercial sector is pivotal in building a network of quantum computers capable of transmitting classical and quantum bits, simulating intricate scientific processes, and integrating precise quantum sensors.
