World Telecommunication & Information Society Day
This annual event is held every 17 May since 1969 marking the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention on the same day in 1865. This year’s theme is Digital technologies for older persons and healthy ageing.
In a world where the ageing of the global population is a decade lasting demographic trend Telecommunications and information communication technologies (ICTs) should contribute to healthier ageing, as well as combat age-based discrimination at the workplace and support millions of older persons and caregivers across the world.
As Houlin Zhao, ITU Secretary-General has remarked: “Equitable access to digital technologies isn’t just a moral responsibility, it’s essential for global prosperity and sustainability”.
