The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is a UN programme aimed at addressing issues pertaining to human settlements and urban development. Founded in 1978 following the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development , UN-Habitat promotes environmentally sustainable towns and cities within the broader framework providing adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat is based at the United Nations Office at Nairobi and operates across 70 different countries worldwide on questions such as urban legislation, urban planning and urban economy.
