World Press Freedom Day 2023

3 May 2023

UN headquarters in New York

The annual World Press Freedom Day, celebrated on May 3rd, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023.

UNESCO is organizing a special event at the UN headquarters in New York to commemorate anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s decision to proclaim an international day for press freedom on World Press Freedom Day 2023. This year’s theme, tentatively titled “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights,” emphasizes the vital role of freedom of expression in enabling and safeguarding all other human rights.

On May 2nd, the anniversary edition of World Press Freedom Day will feature a full day of activities at the UN Headquarters, and media, academic, and civil society partners are encouraged to organize events around the world centered on the theme. Interested parties can refer to the World Press Freedom Day Concept Note and WPFD website for more information.

World Press Freedom Day 2023 will also be an opportunity to present the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, which acknowledges the contributions of journalists, particularly those who take great risks to provide crucial information to the public.
