Build Peace 2016
The Build Peace 2016 conference will take place on 9-11 September 2016, in Zurich, Switzerland. The conference is organised by Build Up, and hosted by ICT4Peace Foundation and ETH Zurich; support is also provided by PeaceNexus and the Alliance for Peacebuilding.
Build Peace is a community that brings together practitioners, activists, and technologists from around the world to share experience and ideas on using technology for peacebuilding and conflict transformation. Around 250 people gather annually at the Build Peace conferences, which have to date been held in Boston (2014, hosted by the MIT Media Lab) and Nicosia (2015, hosted by UNDP). Participants come from as many as 60 different countries, working in national and international NGOs, the UN system, academic institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector.
Under the overarching theme ‘Peace through technology, arts & research: towards transformation’, the 2016 event will focus on the following three themes: political, socio-cultural, and ethics. Some of the specific questions to be addressed during the three-day conference include: What does transformation mean in technology? Can technology enhance the quality of inclusive political negotiations? How technology, globalisation, and politics are changing peace-building organisations.
Build Peace 2016 will also include a Technology Fair, which will allow individuals and organisations to showcase tools that have been or could be applied to the peacebuilding field, and a 36-hour hackaton – #peacehack – where developers and designers will work on developing prototype technology solutions to a peacebuilding challenge.
