Identity development in digital era

The session analysed this question on how we can overcome the difficulty of bringing the global human democracy value creating symbiosis by all for all. Release your World Vision into your projects, with understanding and due care with ethical considerations. Adding diversity with vision and functions with specific purpose into global future society are needed, particularly now. The presentation focused on the examples of how to develop, to govern the technology for Humanity, Democracy and Symbiosis of life-nonlife- Information global Evolution (HDS E) through four levels of digital management, data, algorithm, platform, the Internet.

That session was moderated by Ms Yohko Hatada (Founder and Director, Evolution of Mind Life Society Research Institute, EMLS RI, Japan, UK). She also presented her work on digital technology revolution and pointed to the personal life and functioning of society. She added the Symbiotic Global Ecosystem Evolution by International Citizens. She further talked about learning by doing, creativity, world view shift future vision creation and contribution. Moreover, she noted that all of us as agents develop while sharing value by all and evolve while creating value for all in building the digital era. We have to connect to own calling (identity) and create own internal space with or without the Internet space.

Furthermore, she underlined the Agency as the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make own free choices. By contrast, the structure is the factors of influence (i.e. social class, religion, gender, ethnicity, ability, customs, etc.) that determine or limit an agent and their decisions. According to her, the identity implies the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks and/or expressions that make a person or group (family, professional, communal, etc).

In addition, she talked about current world problems such as the Agency loss on individual and sovereignty levels. She also described the digital technology revolution and its impacts on information, job, power, and culture. She added the competition principle in building common higher values and added that unless we actively make an effort to distribute power and build such mechanisms, the healthy lively society will not develop (democracy).

According to Hatada, citizens’ demands are the world young climate change protests, the world Me Too movements, etc. She highlighted four points of value: Humanity, Democracy, Symbiosis, and Evolvability. She showed some tools for the Agency development such as integrity, deeper understanding, critically constructive, value creative, expansive responsibility and the conflict solution for all/whole. She emphasised digital components in the Internet Society: the Internet, platforms, algorithm system and data. She added that data must be managed to enhance agency and society: privacy, kinds of data, store and analysis, data governance, and data ecosystem building.

Finally, she explained the Algorithmic system and IEEE P7003 Standard for artificial intelligence (AI) Bias Considerations: taxonomy, legal, psychology, and culture. Answering a question from the audience, she said that AI is still at the initial stage and that we must be aware of the mechanisms and processes of this new technology. According to her, the platform enables evolvability in addressing and removing unintended consequences, ensuring governance, security, etc. She concluded with the thought that all of us are agents who develop while sharing value for all and evolve civilisation by creating the value for all and build the digital era.

Mr Ansgar R. Koene (University of Nottingham, UK) in his brief presentation, talked about the question of data retention and data ecosystem building generally. He explained that each agent is building safe and secure risk management for the own or beyond with the integrative drive for the common good. Answering a question from the audience, he said that we have to know the difference between digital identity and normal identity. He added the role of the impact of personal data on individual development.

In addition, Koene said that there is attention on automation and AI. He noted that the automatic decision-making is an issue to be measured. He further pointed out the development process behind the automation and doing clear stakeholder analysis. Finally, he commented on the needs of education and the digital environment of the algorithmic system and AI.
