Global Network Initiative
Acronym: GNI
Established: 2008
Address: 1325 G St. NW, Suite 500 Washington, D.C. 20005
The mission of Global Network Initiative (GNI) is to protect and advance freedom of expression and privacy rights in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector by setting a global standard for responsible decision making and serving as a multistakeholder voice in the face of government restrictions and demands. GNI members include ICT companies, civil society organizations (including human rights and press freedom groups), academics, academic institutions, and investors from around the world.
GNI members work together in two mutually supporting ways. The GNI Principles and Implementation Guidelines provide an evolving framework for responsible company decision making in support of freedom of expression and privacy rights. As company participation expands, the GNI Principles are taking root as a global standard for human rights in the ICT sector. Every two years, GNI company members participate in an independent assessment to determine their progress in implementing the GNI Principles.
The GNI provides quarterly updates (see archive) on its work to protect and advance freedom of expression and privacy in the ICT sector. GNI also publishes an annual report of its activities, and a public assessment report upon completion of its periodic assessment process, among other statements and publications.
