The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is a UN body whose mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment, by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
In practice, UNEP promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, asseses global, regional, and national environmental condistions and trends, develops international and national environmental instruments, and works to strenghten institutions for the wise management of the environment.
As information and communications technologies can bring both opportunities and challenges when it comes to the protection of the environment, UNEP focuses a part of its work on the development of goals, strategies, and tools to help the ICT sector innovate and enable sustainability efforts. UNEP’s initatives in this area focus on issues such as: ICT and climate change, supply chain management, and electronic waste.
UNEP is one of the facilitators of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) action lines, in the area of e-environment.
