E-commerce or Digital Trade or both? What’s negotiated at the WTO in Geneva

11 May 2021

Online

The European Internet Forum (EIF) is hosting a virtual debate on E-commerce or Digital Trade or both? What’s negotiated at the WTO in Geneva? on 11 May 2021.

The debate will explore the ongoing World Trade Organisation (WTO) e-commerce negotiations amongst today’s 86 WTO members. The negotiations highlight digital trade in a broader sense; covering classic business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce as well as business-to-business (B2B) digitally enabled transactions. They look at aspects such as consumer trust and spam, barriers to cross-border sales, e-contracts, and e-signatures, a ban on customs duties on electronic transmissions, forced data localisation, cross-border data flows, forced disclosure of source code, and the improvement of existing WTO rules on telecommunications. The discussion will show the range of issues that are under discussion, the controversies around them as well as  European Union’s aims in the negotiations.
