Open Round Table on democracy in the digital age
A public round table will be held on 29 March 2023 by the European Commission and the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) to discuss how to ensure technological innovation serves democracy and how to strengthen democratic systems for meaningful civic participation.
The EGE is currently working on these questions at the request of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and their opinion will inform the revision of the European Democracy Action Plan and the development of the Defence of Democracy package. The round table will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including academia, international organizations, industry, and civil society organizations, to discuss recent technological advancements and longstanding tensions in democracy. The event will provide a forum for dialogue and an opportunity for experts and interested parties to provide input and refine the EGE’s recommendations.
