Violent Extremism Online – A Challenge to Peace and Security

The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces will hold a seminar on ‘ Violent Extremism Online – A Challenge to Peace and Security’ , on 31 January 2017, in Geneva, Switzerland.
The objective of the seminar is to analyse the role of the Internet and social media platforms as tools for both facilitatings and preventing violent extremism in the online sphere. It also aims to establish linkages between preventing violent extremism online and cybersecurity at large by drawing analogies, inter alia with respect to the overall governance structure pertinent to securing cyberspace.
Discussions will revolve around the following questions:
- What are best practices in preventing violent extremism online?
- What is the role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in that regard; and which responsibilities do the respective stakeholders bear?
- What is the potential of PPPs in to help ensure that international human rights law standards and the rule of law are respected and protected when preventing and challenging violent extremism online, in particular in respect to filtering, blocking, and removing online content?
