[Webinar] Opening backdoors: Encryption, privacy, and security Q&A session
[Update] The webinar, and especially the lively debate among participants, inspired DiploFoundation to write a series of blog posts which argue the main dilemmas, played out by three fictitious characters, Privarius, Securium, and Commercias. The ‘Socratic dialogue’ tackles core concepts and underlying assumptions of the case. Read the first post covering the main facts, and the second post on security-related arguments. The third, fourth, and fifth narratives will be published on 26, 28, and 30 March. Stay tuned!
[Update] The recording is now available.
The US court’s ruling requesting Apple to assist the FBI in unlocking an iPhone triggered a global controversy over encryption and the creation of backdoors. Apple reacted strongly, and other tech companies pledged their support, as the case unfolds in court. The outcome is likely to have a major impact on security and privacy, in particular as national governments debate the introduction of data access safeguards.
What are the latest developments, and how does this debate fit into the broader technology and policy picture? What is at stake in this debate? Our jargon-free webinar, on Thursday, 17th March, will give you a chance to ask questions and get clarifications. The webinar will include:
- 10-minute introduction to the specifics of the Apple vs FBI case, and an exploration of what is at stake
- 45-minute open discussion (Q&A format)
- 5-minute concluding remarks
Join us online on Thursday, 17th March, at 12:00 UTC (13:00 CET). Register to participate; the webinar link will be e-mailed to you one hour before the start of the webinar.
