WIPO Information Session on Geographical Indications

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will hold an Information Session on Geographical Indications, on 28 March 2017, in Geneva, Switzerland.

While the first part of the session will discuss features, experiences, and practices of the different national and regional geographic indication protection systems, the second part will focus on the protection of geographic indications on the Internet, and geographical indications and country names in the Domain Name System (DNS). During this second part of the event, there will be several sub-sections on: Overview of geographical indications/country name protection in the DNS: generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and country code top-level domains (ccTLDs); The experience of users with respect to geographical indications on the Internet and in the DNS; The experience of a country with respect to its name in the DNS; and a Briefing by the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
