18th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium – WTIS-23
Event Update
The annual World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposiums (WTIS) convenes public officials, private sector leaders, regulators, academics, and other partners to discuss the most recent developments in the digital and data fields. This year’s WTIS was themed ‘Advancing the measurement agenda to achieve universal and meaningful connectivity’.
The symposium underscored the significance of utilising extensive data from private open-data sources and mobile phone data to support evidence-driven policies and promote innovation in information society statistics, such as new ways of measuring ICT availability, access, usage, and affordability. It also shared the outcomes from two expert groups, which affirmed the central role of internationally comparable data in monitoring ICT-related developments.
ITU, in collaboration with the EU, launched the Dashboard for Universal and Meaningful Connectivity during the symposium. The dashboard tracks country progress and performance across connectivity metrics. ITU and the World Bank Group also announced their collaboration on putting mobile phone data to work for policymaking.
