Chinese President calls for national control of Internet content
In his speech during the World Internet Conference, Chinese President Xi Jinping argued that states hould cooperate in curbing the ‘abusive use of information technology’. According to Xi, ‘cyberspace is similar to the real world in that both freedom and order are necessary’, which is why the Internet would need strong governmental control. Since Xi has assumed leadership in China in 2013, he has taken extensive efforts to control and centralise Chinese Internet governance.
