France pushes for EU biometric data sharing network for police
France is advocating for a European Union-wide biometric data sharing network among police forces to improve cross-border criminal investigations. France’s proposal, known as the ‘Prüm Regulation,’ aims to expand the scope of shared data to include driving licenses, facial images, and more. A vote on this proposal is set for 10 June.
The French presidency has proposed a regulation to allow police across the EU to share their records to facilitate cross country criminal investigations. Known as ‘Prüm II Regulation’ , the French suggestion builds on a previous proposal on criminal data record sharing. It however calls for more data to be included in automated searches. This includes driving licences, facial images, and DNA. France is pushing for the vote on this proposal to be taken on 10 June.
