The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a memorandum requesting federal states to assess their cybersecurity risks and needs concerning drinking water systems. According to the memorandum, while some public water systems have strengthened their cybersecurity, a survey and reports of cyber-attacks show that many still need to incorporate essential cybersecurity best practices and are at risk of cyber-attacks. Therefore, the agency instructed the states to include cybersecurity issues when conducting periodic water system audits.
