Sri Lanka plans to establish online sex education, prioritizing child safety online

Sri Lanka is preparing to provide students with online sex education, with a launch date anticipated for October 2023. The Parliamentary Caucus for Children, chaired by MP Rohini Kumari Wijerathna, is promoting the program. The caucus met to discuss several urgent topics, including cyberbullying against minors in the nation and sexuality education and reproductive health.

During the meeting, representatives emphasized that the initial wave of sexual and reproductive health education would be provided online via new media channels. They also suggested spreading knowledge about the 1929 hotline service and restoring a complaint box for kids to anonymously register complaints in schools.

The Caucus also announced the creation of a new cybersecurity law while reviewing current legislation on child cyberbullying. Child pornography websites and objectionable information aimed towards minors on numerous social media platforms have drawn criticism. As the media’s treatment of instances involving children has frequently been regarded unethical and insensitive, the requirement for a responsible media strategy was also highlighted.
