EU, GIZ, and Orange collaborate on a digital transformation initiative in Côte d’Ivoire
The project centres on harnessing the power of digital technology to drive innovation and progress throughout the cocoa value chain.
Orange, the European Union, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) have launched the “DigiGreen & Agri” project in Côte d’Ivoire with an $8 million investment to drive digital transformation, aiming to foster innovation for a more sustainable and inclusive economy. The project’s key objectives include creating quality jobs, supporting startup growth and funding, and encouraging sustainable investments, focusing on empowering rural youth, women, girls, and individuals with disabilities through the Orange Digital Center in Côte d’Ivoire.
This partnership seeks to enhance professional skills, promote entrepreneurship, develop sustainable digital solutions, and accelerate the growth of seed startups, ultimately supporting youth talent, entrepreneurship, and economic development in vulnerable communities. Ambassador Francesca Di Mauro of the European Union in Côte d’Ivoire emphasized that the project demonstrates the EU’s commitment to enhancing smart, clean, and secure digital connections as part of the Global Gateway strategy. At the same time, GIZ Director Axel Klaphake emphasized how startup support will drive innovation and job creation, particularly in the cocoa production sector. Orange CEO Jérôme Hénique reaffirmed the telco’s dedication to sustainable development and innovation through impactful partnerships like this one in Côte d’Ivoire.
Why does it matter?
Crucially, the partnership is committed to working closely with local stakeholders, recognising the importance of community engagement in driving meaningful change. This collaboration is part of the broader Team Europe Initiatives (TEI) for sustainable cocoa and the low-carbon transition. With its potential to create jobs and uplift the livelihoods of cocoa farmers, the “DigiGreen & Agri” project promises to kickstart positive and lasting transformation within the cocoa sector in Côte d’Ivoire and beyond.
