Special units to protect Russia’s military Internet
The Russian Armed Forces are forming special units, whose task will be to search for and neutralise virtual threats to the ‘military Internet’. Military units in the field are working on the principle of building networks with private IP-addresses, thus there is a technical opportunity to detect these networks by radio channel radiation, to try to invade and interfere with the work. The most vulnerable are wi-fi networks deployed by the military. By breaking them, an enemy can see traffic, spread disinformation, or completely intercept control systems.
There is already a software developed that provides a multi-level protection system of local networks that unite the field control points. The system will help special units to identify and localise consequences of attacks on military networks. Notably, conscript soldiers will not be able to get into such units. The units will be staffed exclusively with officers with higher technical education.
