Researchers develop AI to complete Beethoven’s unfinished symphony
German musicologists and computer programmers are developing an artificial intelligence (AI) system tasked with completing Beethoven’s unfinished 10th symphony. The machine learning behind the system is fed with the musical sketches Beethoven left behind for this symphony, as well as with other examples of the work of the composer and of others who influenced him. Human input will also be added to the project: the AI system will write the music, but a human composer will orchestrate it. The AI-produced symphony will be played live in Bonn – Beethoven’s birthplace – in April 2020.
