German Court downscale multimillion GDPR fine by 90%
According to the Data Protection Report, the Regional Court of Bonn has recently significantly reduced a multi-million euro fine initially levied by the German data protection authority (DPA) on the basis that it was disproportionate. In December 2019, the German DPA fined the telecom operator 1&1 Telecom €9.55m for GDPR violations. The Regional Court of Bonn decided that too much emphasis had been given to the turnover of 1&1 Telecom in calculating the fine, calling the calculation model used by the German authorities into question, and thus reduced the fine to €900,000.
