European Commission unveils its Democracy Action Plan
The European Commission has released its European Democracy Action Plan (EDAP) that will be implemented throughout the Commission’s present mandate. The EDAP aims to fight disinformation, strengthen media freedom, and promote free and fair elections in order to build more resilient democracies across the EU. The plan includes (a) proposing legislation to ensure better transparency in the area of sponsored content in political advertising; (b) improving the EU’s capability for countering foreign interference in the information space; (c) improving efforts to implement the Code of Practice on Disinformation into a co-regulatory framework of obligation and accountability of online platforms; (d) releasing guidance to implement the Code of Practice by the spring 2021; (e) setting up a more robust framework for monitoring the Code of Practice implementation.
