US defense policy bill prepares Pentagon to operationalise 5G
The annual defense policy bill for the fiscal year 2021 would recognise the IT responsibilities of the US Department of Defense (DoD) to operationalise 5G wireless networks. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which recently passed the US House of Representatives, would establish a 5G cross-functional team inside the DoD and designate the chief information officer as the senior official on 5G networks. The Section 224 of the NDAA effectively shifts the project from the research phase to an operational program. If signed into law, the bill would direct the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering to create a plan for transitioning 5G technology to operational use within the DoD.
