24 September – Edward Snowden lends his name and support to a new proposed international treaty calling for the end of mass surveillance, greater protection for whistle-blowers and the strengthening of citizens’ right to privacy. The treaty was created by experts in international law and surveillance, and calls on states to reaffirm and protect citizens’ fundamental rights.
