Biden extends decree on sanctions over foreign interference in elections
US president Joe Biden extended a 2018 decree declaring foreign interference in American elections or undermining public confidence a national emergency. The national emergency declared on 12 September 2018 will therefore remain in effect until 12 September 2022. The document has served as a basis for sanctioning Russian individuals and organisations for alleged election meddling in the past.
The continuation of the national emergency was to be expected considering Biden’s remark during his 27 July visit to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI): ‘Look at what Russia’s doing already about the 2022 election and misinformation’.
