Google’s Eric Schmidt calls for tools to counter hate speech online
In the midst of the heated debate between free speech and censorship to fight terrorists’ use of the Internet, Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt has written an op-ed in The New York Times pleading for mechanisms to counter online extremism. ‘We should build tools to help de-escalate tensions on social media – sort of like spell checkers, but for hate and harassment’ and ‘target social accounts for terrorist groups like the Islamic State, and remove videos before they spread’, he writes.
