AfDec supports regional initiatives addressing impacts of COVID-19 measures on digital rights
The African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms (AfDec) Coalition, according to a news report, has launched a Rapid Response Fund to provide support to members of the Coalition working on projects that seeks to review national-level emergency response initiatives and policies aimed at the prevention, containment and treatment of COVID-19 within the context of AfDec objectives and principles. AfDec believes that supporting such projects will go a long way to curb the repressive effects associated with measures rolled out by governments to address the pandemic. Notable among human and digital rights often repressed and relegated include freedom of movement, the right to privacy and the right to access information. According to the report, AfDec is currently supporting 6 initiatives being undertaken by the grantees in Africa.
