Amazon stops police use of facial recognition technology

The US technology company Amazon has announced a one-year moratorium on the use of its facial recognition technology Rekognition by the police . Amazon says that the decision was made to allow Congress and other bodies to come up with relevant frameworks for the ethical use of facial recognition technology.

The company will however continue to supply organisations such as Thorn, the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC), and Marinus Analytics which use Rekognition in the rescue of human trafficking victims and for finding missing families.
