AWS to launch HIPAA-eligible data management service
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of Amazon HealthLake. The new service allows healthcare and life science organisations to aggregate health information from different silos and formats into a centralised AWS data lake. HealthLake uses machine learning (ML) models to normalise health data and automatically extract meaningful information from the data. Furthermore, it can automatically structure information into HL7’s Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), an emerging standard for healthcare data exchange. It is Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-eligible, which means the service is capable of being configured in a way that meets HIPAA compliance requirements to protect the safety and privacy of patients. Software companies have rolled out a number of healthcare data management and analysis tools as more and vast amounts of digital health data has become available with the advent of electronic medical records.
