Blocking gambling platforms
In a state effort to tackle illegal online gambling, the National Directorate for Lotteries, an agency of the Uruguayan Ministry of Economy, has recently restructured its administration and regulations to tackle new modalities of online gambling considered as illegal in Uruguay.
So far, the state agency has identified 63 online betting platforms that operate illegally in the country. 40 such sites have already been blocked by a provision by the Directorate for Lotteries in conjunction with the Communications Services Regulatory Unit (Ursec). The provision has already been executed by the three telecom operators: Antel, Claro and Movistar. It is expected that the remaining platforms will be blocked during the course of August.
