Canada: Data indicates rise in child online abuse during the pandemic

The recently released Statistics Canada data reveal an increase in Child pornography charges and cases of online sexual abuse of children during the lockdown

Data indictes 27% increase in charges of creating or distributing child pornography material online; 19 per cent increase in accessing or possessing child sexual content; a 15 per cent increase in luring a child online; and an 11 per cent increase in the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection shared that its child sexual abuse reporting hotline CyberTip.ca recorded a 40 per cent increase in calls in the first two weeks of the pandemic and a 106 per cent increase by the end of the 2020 fiscal year.
