A publication under China’s state news agency Xinhua reported how the current research environment, imperative for nurturing talent, is somewhat skewed due to the grant distribution system. Analysts have cautioned that progress in advancing research and technology is hindered by its ‘title-centric’ academic funding system.

The grant application is reportedly biassed as it is evaluated by renowned individuals who favour those with pedigrees from prestigious programs, thereby forming a viscous power and funding cycle that keeps resources concentrated and circling among few. Additionally, it favours quick-result research over long-term projects. As such, these grants, offering significant subsidies, indicate the influence of administrative power on China’s academic research.
