Court declares Uber a transport company
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that Uber is a transport company in the EU, and will be treated like other taxi companies. Member states will now be able to regulate the conditions for providing that service. The case was referred to the CJEU by Spanish judge in August 2015, asking ‘… whether the firm (Uber) should be considered as a transport service provider or a digital platform’. The ruling brought to an end a major debate, with implications to sharing economy businesses. Mapping Uber: Learn more about legal cases and other issues surrounding the ride-sharing company.
