EU launches €8.1 billion initiative to drive microelectronics and communication technologies

The European Commission has approved an ambitious initiative, an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), jointly developed by 14 EU member states. This strategic undertaking aims to propel research, innovation, and the initial industrial implementation of microelectronics and communication technologies across the entire value chain.

Compliant with EU State Aid regulations, the project is expected to receive up to €8.1 billion in public funding from the member states, which is projected to attract an additional €13.7 billion in private investments. IPCEI will foster collaboration among 56 enterprises, encompassing small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) and startups, who will contribute to 68 projects under its umbrella.

By (i) developing cutting-edge microelectronics and communication solutions and (ii) building electronics systems and manufacturing techniques that are resource- and energy-efficient, these programs seek to enable digital and green transformation. They will aid in developing numerous technological fields, including communications (5G and 6G), autonomous vehicles, AI, and quantum computing. Additionally, they will assist businesses engaged in producing, transferring, and consuming energy in shifting to a more environmentally friendly business model.

The first unique items could hit the market as early as 2025, and the project’s completion is anticipated in 2032; however, exact dates will depend on the project and the companies involved. A lot more indirect jobs will likely be produced in addition to the 8.700 planned direct jobs.
