FBI chief to alert Congress to imminent Chinese threat to critical infrastructure
The warning comes shortly after reports of the FBI and DoJ obtaining a court order to address vulnerabilities in critical US infrastructure.
FBI Director Christopher Wray is set to alert the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party about the escalating threat of Chinese cyberattacks on US infrastructure, particularly targeting electrical grids.
Wray emphasizes the potential for significant harm if China decides to strike and highlights the insufficient public awareness of these attacks on critical infrastructure, including water treatment plants, electrical grids, oil and gas pipelines, and transportation systems.
He contends that the cyber onslaught extends beyond preparing for future conflicts, with Chinese hackers actively engaging in daily attacks, posing risks to US economic security, innovation, and personal data.
Wray underscores the impact on American freedoms, citing attempts to silence, coerce, and threaten citizens and residents.
Previously this week, news reports claimed that the FBI and Department of Justice (DoJ) had obtained a court order to address vulnerabilities in numerous internet-connected devices linked to a Chinese hacking campaign targeting critical US infrastructure.
