Google, Facebook announce subsea cable linking Japan and Southeast Asia
Google and Facebook announced a new subsea cable system for 2024 to improve internet connectivity in the Asia-Pacific region. Project Apricot will link Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Indonesia and help serve growing demand for broadband access and 5G wireless connectivity. This follows a March announcement of two new transpacific subsea cables connecting Singapore to the US west coast, Bifrost and Echo, with Google being involved with Echo. Google has said that the Echo and Apricot cables are complementary submarine systems and Apricot has an initial design capacity of more than 190 terabits per second.
