IBM drops facial recognition technology
The American technology company IBM has committed to no longer develop, research, or offer general purpose facial recognition technology. In a letter to some US senators, IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna condenmed the indiscriminate use of facial recognition software for mass surveillance and racial profiling, and stated they go against company values. Facial recognition software has in the past raised concerns over bias, inaccurate, and ubiquitous data collection. Some US cities, such as San Francisco, have banned the use of the software in policing.
