ICANN publishes a report on the Domain Name System for the Middle East and Adjoining Countries
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has published a report on the Domain Name System for the Middle East and Adjoining Countries (MEAC). The report contains information about the current state of the Internet and the domain name industry in the region. Although only 1% of the world’s registered domains are currently in the MEAC region, there is an increasing growth in domain name registration, of more than 20% per year. There are 21 000 Internationalised Domain Names in the region, half of them in Latin script (under .tr, the country code domain for Turkey) and the other half in Arabic. The conclusion of the report is that ‘the potential for the domain name market in the region is still strong, but multiple actions need to be undertaken by various actors in order to generate rapid growth’.
