India launches nation al portal for transgender persons
India’s Ministry of social justice and empowerment launches national online portal for transgender persons. The portal will enable them to apply online to get their identity certified without visiting offices, with the aim to protect their privacy and safety. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019 came into effect in January 2020. This law provides the so-called self-perceived identification by an applicant for an identity certificate. The portal also enables community members linkages with facilities and other schemes online. For example, the ministry also set up a shelter for transgender persons who were forced to leace their homes or were abandoned by their family. This way they get information about shelters more easily too.
