India PM launches undersea fiber cable connecting Chennai, Andaman & Nicobar islands
An undersea cable connecting Chennai, Andaman & Nicobar islands was formally commissioned by India’s Prime Minister Narenda Modi. The cable will cover seven of the Andaman & Nicobar islands in addition to Port Blair. The intent is for the cable to provide access to less expensive better connectivity and facilitate enhanced online education, tele-medicine, online banking and trading and even tourism. BSNL laid the undersea cable in under 24 months and OFC connectivity will enhance 4G mobile services on the islands. The cable commissioning has also facilitated the launch of 4G services by Airtel in the islands.
