Indonesia calls for global solidarity and trust in UNGA speech

In his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia emphasized the importance of global solidarity and collective responsibility in addressing the trust deficit and global inequality.

Indonesia highlighted the urgent need to rebuild trust and reignite global solidarity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially for countries in the global south. He questioned the commitment of world leaders in fulfilling their promises and called for actions that align with their words. The delegate expressed concern over the deep trust deficit, soaring differences, and conflicts that plague the world today. He stressed the need for consistent adherence to international law, resolution of disputes through negotiations rather than violence.

Indonesia also emphasized the importance of development for all countries and the need to address trade discrimination and monopolization of global supply chains, particularly affecting developing nations.

‘We need developed countries also to fulfill their responsibility, including on climate financing, green investment, and transfer of technology. Technology and innovation should not be exclusive for the selected few. Access to safe and secure digital technology for developing countries, including AI, is crucial for future sustainable growth’

Indonesia stressed the need for reforming the multilateral system and translating commitments into action, mentioning the upcoming 2024 Summit of the Future as an opportunity to reaffirm trust and solidarity.
