Internet backbone provider Lumen stops operations in Russia
Internet backbone provider Lumen has announced that it will stop its operations in Russia immediately ‘due to increased security risk inside Russia’. Lumen is the second Tier 1 internet service provider (ISP) to pause its operations in Russia after Cogent Communications.
Lumen noted that it has an extremely small number of enterprise customers and a very limited physical presence in Russia. While the company did not share its list of customers, network analyst firm Kentik claims that Lumen’s customer list includes the country’s biggest telecoms firm, Rostelecom; the major broadband provider, TransTelecom (TTK); and three large mobile operators, MTS, Megafon, and VEON.
