Interpol announces cryptojacking operation in Southeastern Asia
Interpol announced it had been coordinating an operation against cryptojacking (use of victims’ devices to mine cryptocurrency) in Southeast Asia. The operation, entitled Goldfish Alpha, identified the infected MicroTik routers, alerted their owners and patched the vulnerability exploited by cyber criminals. At the beginning of the operation, more than 20,000 routers in the region were hacked, accounting for 18% of infections globally. When the operation concluded, 22% of the routers were still affected and efforts to remove infections from them continue. The operation lasted from June to November 2019.
