Ireland published the Representative Actions for the Protection of the Collective Interests of Consumers Bill 2023
Ireland introduced the Representative Actions for the Protection of the Collective Interests of Consumers Bill 2023 to give effect to Directive (EU) 2020/1828 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2020.
On 13 March 2023, the bill Representative Actions for the Protection of the Collective Interests of Consumers Bill 2023 was published. The objective of the Bill is to implement Directive (EU) 2020/1828 of the European Parliament and Council, which concerns representative actions for safeguarding the collective interests of consumers and repeals Directive 2009/22/EC, and to make provisions for associated issues.
The bill introduced a new civil litigation mechanism, including the ‘Qualified Entity,’ to take domestic representative actions, cross-border representative actions, or both on behalf of consumers against a trader that disrespects the collective interests of consumers.
