ITU and the World Bank report assesses the ICT sector emissions and policy implications

A recent report titled “Measuring the Emissions & Energy Footprint of the ICT Sector: Implications for Climate Action,” released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Bank, has spotlighted the urgent need for climate action within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Despite two-thirds of the world’s population being online, the report underscores the significance of implementing sustainable practices within the digital realm to promote sustainable development and bridge the digital gap.

The report has two main sections. Initially, it evaluates the ICT sector’s energy usage and emissions output. Subsequently, it delves into the policy and regulatory ramifications derived from this data and scrutinizes these matters across case studies in 4 different continents.

ITU’s analysis reveals a growing concern regarding the environmental footprint of the ICT sector. While the ICT industry drives innovation and development, it also significantly contributes to global emissions – estimated to be more than 1.7% by the report.
