Jamaica assures citizens of biometric data encryption
The programme director for Jamaica’s National Identification System (NIDS), Warren Vernon has assured citizens that the national digital identification database will be encrypted. He also stated that facial images and fingerprints will be stored offline to minimise the risk of identity theft. He was speaking during a town hall meeting on the National Identification and Registration ActT, enacted in 2020. The Act makes it voluntary for citizens to register for digital ID. A previous law, the National Identification and Registration Act (NIRA) which made digital ID mandatory was nullified by the Jamaican Supreme Court in 2019.
