Kenyan coalition offers recommendations for UN Code of Conduct on Digital Platform Information Integrity
These recommendations, originating from a diverse expert consultation in Nairobi, reflect the stance of the coalition on preserving information integrity, enhancing governance of digital platforms, and empowering users.
In response to growing concerns over the spread of misinformation and hate speech online, a coalition of Kenyan experts has put forth recommendations for the proposed UN Code of Conduct on Information Integrity on Digital Platforms, which aims to enhance the safety and inclusivity of digital spaces while upholding freedom of expression and access to information. The document is set to be discussed at the 2024 United Nations Summit of the Future.
The National Coalition on Freedom of Expression and Content Moderation in Kenya (FECoMo), established under UNESCO’s Social Media 4 Peace project, aims to provide critical insights and African perspectives to global norms-setting efforts.
The recommendations, stemming from a multidisciplinary expert consultation held in Nairobi, describe FECoMo’s stance on preserving information integrity, enhancing governance of digital platforms, and empowering users, especially in the context of Kenya and Africa. It also emphasises the importance of collaboration between governments and tech companies to promote a safer digital environment while safeguarding freedom of expression.
Why does it matter?
The proposed UN Code of Conduct emerged as a response to the proliferation of misinformation and hate speech online, a phenomenon that poses significant threats to societies, democracies, and individual rights. As the code aims to have a global impact, FECoMo’s involvement reflects the importance of considering African countries’ specific challenges and priorities in international policy-making. The move ensures that the code doesn’t become another ineffective standard that overlooks diverse contexts.
