New Philippine Digital ID system set to boost security and convenience
The Philippines increase the security features of its PhiIID and ePhilID with the launch of the PhilSys Check website.
The 83 million Filipinos registered for PhilSys can now expect to experience more robust features. PhilSys Check, the new system, which was designed with the country[’s Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) in mind, utilises biometrics and a QR code framed digital signature, which is situated at the back of the PhilID and the ePhilID. The PhilSys Check website is accessed using a mobile device or a computer to verify the identity of PhilID and ePhilID holders seeking access to civil registry documents. Registrants submit their iris, fingerprint, and face biometrics upon application.
The system’s implementation body, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), anticipates the new system will deliver widespread wins for the Filipino economy, including moving the needle on important metrics like the ease of doing business, fraud prevention, and financial inclusion. It assures citizens of the delivery of privacy from registration to authentication. To date, some 45.6 million Filipinos have already been issued ePhilIDs.
Why does it matter?
A robust Digital ID system can calm existing fears around eIDs. It can also lend a hand in the fight against the number of growing cybersecurity threats from which the Philippines has not been spared.
