Nigeria’s president gives conditions for lifting the ban on Twitter in the country
According to a news report, the president of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari has announced that the current ban on Twitter in the country would be lifted but only if the social media meets the conditions of setting up an office in the country and paying taxes. The president who made the announcement during a televised broadcast to Nigerians on the country’s 61st Independence Day anniversary, recognized the benefit of Twitter as a service for disseminating information. He however highlighted that there are also bad actors who misuse the platform to “organise, coordinate, and execute criminal activities, propagate fake news, and promote ethnic and religious sentiments.” President Buhari said this misuse of the platform informed the government’s decision to suspend the operations of the social media platform in the country on 5 June, 2021. He further said that the government has been able to put measures in place to address the current challenges and to get the service restored.
